The Humane Society of Pagosa Springs lost a very special friend when Peter Van Hercke, age 63, died April 13, 2011, of cancer. Peter was born in Pottstown, Pa. He was a Vietnam veteran who lived and worked in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, until his move to Pagosa Springs in 2005. Since his move, he could often be found in local restaurants, hiking with friends, and volunteering for the Humane Society of Pagosa Springs.
Peter found his way to becoming a volunteer for the Humane Society after he adopted his dog Earl from our animal shelter in December 2005. Earl was one of seven puppies born to Daisy, who was one of the 105 animals rescued in a joint effort by the Humane Society of Pagosa Springs and Dogster's Spay and Neuter Program of Durango from Hurricane Katrina in September 2005. Peter devoted one day a week at the counter of the Thrift Store and handled remodeling projects for both the animal shelter and thrift store. With his strong back and willing attitude, he became a key helper in the delivery and pick up of store furniture and helped set up at all Humane Society fundraiser events. Peter's dog pal Earl is now living with his blood brother Ollie who he has enjoyed playing with since birth. Peter will always be remembered for putting laughter in all our hearts.
Donations in Peter’s name can be made to the Humane Society Thrift Store Parking Lot Fund by clicking here.
